What if someone was being beaten in front of you and instead of helping, you pulled out your phone?
WITNESS is a short Nigerian film about our growing culture of recording suffering instead of responding to it.
The story follows David, a young content creator who records a woman being publicly harassed and later films a young man being violently attacked. Each time, he chooses his camera over intervention. The videos go viral, and David celebrates the views.
Until tragedy enters his own life.
WHY THIS FILM MATTERS
We live in a world where almost everyone has a camera in their pocket. Social media can expose injustice and give people a voice but it can also turn someone’s suffering into content.
WITNESS asks difficult questions about empathy, violence, social media and our responsibility to one another.
It asks:
When does witnessing become complicity?
This is not simply David’s story. It is about the crowd. It is about what we learn from watching others. And it is about the kind of society we are creating for the next generation.
The screenplay ends with a powerful reminder:
“We cannot call ourselves innocent simply because we were watching.”
