Campaign Story

I am a Senior Lecturer in the Mechanical Engineering Department at Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), Nigeria.

But long before I became a lecturer, I was simply a small child in Osogbo, Osun State, struggling to take my first steps.

When I was 11 months old, I was infected with Poliomyelitis. The disease partially paralyzed my right leg, changing the course of my life forever.

Growing up with a disability in Nigeria in the late 1970s and 1980s was not easy. There were few mobility aids, little rehabilitation support, and very limited awareness about disability inclusion.

Many days were painful.

I could not run like other children.
I could not move easily.
And sometimes people doubted whether a child like me could succeed.

But I refused to let my condition define my future.

With determination, education, and the support of a few people who believed in me, I continued pushing forward.

Years later, that same child who struggled to walk earned a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering and became a university lecturer.

But My Story Is Not the Story of Most Disabled Children

Every day across South-West Nigeria, I see children who remind me of my younger self.

Children who cannot walk properly.
Children who crawl on the ground because their families cannot afford wheelchairs.
Children who stay at home because their parents cannot afford school fees.

In many communities across Oyo State, Osun State, Ogun State, Ondo State, Ekiti State, and Lagos State, disability and poverty often go hand in hand.

A child may have the intelligence to become a doctor, engineer, teacher, or scientist…

But because their family cannot afford medical care, mobility aids, or education, their dreams slowly disappear.

This reality breaks my heart—because I know what those children could become if someone helped them.

That Is Why I Started the “Steps of Hope Initiative”

This initiative is dedicated to helping physically challenged children from low-income families receive:

• Medical care and rehabilitation
• Mobility aids such as wheelchairs and crutches
• Access to quality education

Our goal is simple:

Give disabled children the opportunity to live with dignity, mobility, and hope.

With enough support, this initiative aims to:

• Provide medical treatment and rehabilitation for 150 children
• Supply wheelchairs and mobility aids to over 100 children
• Support education for at least 200 disabled children
