Campaign Story

Illiteracy, inadequate social amenities and poverty are three common issues in most African communities and unfortunately, Iboropa, a village with a population of over 5,000 people is one of the communities that is ravaged by these three problems. Iboropa is a located in Akoko in Ondo state, southwest Nigeria. The community is a major producer of cassava flakes otherwise known as garri in Ondo state but the poor infrastructure makes it impossible to move the product from the village to the town for sale.
After a discussion with the first crowned princess of the kingdom, it was clear that the community needs the support of well-meaning individuals to develop the community and empower its inhabitants. Thus, the primary focus is to tackle illiteracy and poverty as well as improve the community’s infrastructure. Below is a detailed account of the challenges Iboropa is facing.
Education
There are 3 public schools (2 primary and 1 secondary school) in Iboropa that currently caters to about 500 students in total and in all three schools, there are fewer than 20 teachers in total. Normally, the schools should be able to cater to at least 1000 students if they were in good condition. Some of the school buildings are on the verge of collapsing; they lack windows and doors, and there are insufficient good chairs and tables. During the rainy season, students have to find somewhere else to learn and all this have led to massive education apathy, as parents now prefer to have their children below the age of 10 working with them on the farms instead of going to school.
Social amenities
The inhabitants of the Iboropa community do not have access to good water because the three boreholes in the community are not functioning. The boreholes need electricity to power them and they need repairs too. Sanitation is also a major challenge here and inhabitants are prone to diseases because there is no waste disposal machinery in place.
Poverty
Most of the families in Iboropa live below $1 daily and this makes them unable to sponsor their children to school and access medical care when necessary. The garri processing mill in the community is not functioning because of lack of electricity and the women who engage in trades like soap production, animal rearing and so on; do not have buyers because of the bad roads that make the community inaccessible by buyers.
Your donation will help do the following:
  • Renovate at least one of the school buildings.
  • Organize a mass enlightenment campaign to educate families on the need for their children to be educated and to combat teenage pregnancies and early marriage.
  • Organize a campaign against teenage pregnancies,
  • Create a structure to provide support to teachers in cash and kind to encourage them to teach the children.
  • Provide some chairs and tables for the children.
  • Host a back-to-school project in September to encourage the children to attend school.
  • Fix all three boreholes and get a good generator for one of them.
  • Start the discussion with a solar power company to see the feasibility of solar panels being installed to support the boreholes.
  • Create an interim solution to combat the sanitation challenges either by recycling or encouraging by use of food waste to produce fertilizers.
  • Start to renovate the garri processing mill and make plans to secure equipment to get the site working again.
This is the beginning of a long-term partnership with the Iboropa community to rebuild the community and ensure that its inhabitants have a good standard of living. Your donation will go a long way in supporting this project and as such, you are encouraged to support this initiative. Nothing is too small and bit by bit, we will eventually save Iboropa.
Thank you as you do so.
