Campaign Story
My community is known for child marriage. It has been so normalized that girls now aspire to only marriage. They see it as priority and as a way to get empowerment. Boys their ages are sent to further their education or have businesses set up for them. But girls lack this kind of support and are groomed for domestic work instead.
That is why, our team of volunteers aim to create a space that would expose early Nigerian teens to resources that would help elevate their mindsets. We hope to do this by connecting 150 girls in 3 schools to already thriving women for mentorship. This way, they get to learn the steps and pathways they may need to get to achieve success in their careers. We also hope to start book, art and chess clubs.
In the book clubs, the girls would be prompted to read, review and answer questions on books like The Girl with the Louding Voice, Atomic Habits and Rich Dad Poor Dad. At the Art & Craft clubs, girls would be given opportunities to make art and recycle garbage. This would initiate creativity and togetherness. And for the Chess clubs, girls would learn to play board games like scrabble and chess. This would develop their cognitive and problem-solving skills.
We also have plans to encourage the beneficiaries by awarding highly participating students with gifts. This way, more girls would learn to dream bigger. Hence, bridging the gender gap in our society.
