Short Story

Hello, my name is Onuoha, G. U. and I’m reaching out from a place of both strength and vulnerability.

I live with Sickle Cell Disorder (SS) and have faced unimaginable challenges—physically, emotionally, and socially. Despite the pain, I’ve stayed strong. I’ve pushed through chronic health battles, survived betrayal, endured a long-term injury from an accident that left my right ankle stiff and painful since 2011, and most of all, I’ve lived alone for years—100% independent, without friends or family to lean on.

I’ve also worked hard to build a life, earning a Diploma in Science Laboratory Technology, an HND in Biology/Microbiology, and now I’m pursuing my BSc in Public Health. But even with all my qualifications, I’ve only been able to secure jobs using my SSCE. Still, I push forward every single day.

But the deepest ache in my heart is the one that has stayed with me the longest—I want to be a mother.

I’m now 37 years old, and with each passing day, I’m more aware of how time and health are working against me. Due to my condition and the pain I’ve carried from a broken long-term relationship, I’m not in a position to get pregnant naturally. However, I still dream of having children through surrogacy, just like other women who’ve bravely chosen that path—including people like Ini Edo, who have inspired me not to give up.

My goal is to raise ₦6,000,000 (or around $5,000–$6,000) to begin this process in a local clinic here in Nigeria. Every contribution, no matter how small, brings me one step closer to building the family my heart has longed for.

This isn’t just about having a child. It’s about legacy. It’s about not growing old in silence. It’s about filling the empty space in my life with love, joy, and the bond only a mother and child can share.

If you’re reading this and it touches your heart in any way, please consider supporting me—or sharing this with someone who can. Thank you for seeing me. Thank you for believing in my dream.

With love and hope,

Onuoha, G. U.
